Autism

Among a multitude of other mental issues, Joshua Block has autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Josh's autism manifests itself via frequent stimming (self-stimulatory behaviors) such as head shaking, nose scratching, and verbal repetition of questions or phrases. Josh also experiences moderate learning disabilities, and like many individuals with autism, he exhibits intense focus (a hyperfixation, fascination, or obsession) on specific interests or topics.

Stimming

Stimming, or self-stimulatory behavior, refers to repetitive movements or sounds often exhibited by individuals with autism. In Josh's case, this is exhibited through his unusual head movements and repetitive catchphrases.

Hyperfixations

Hyperfixations are intense, prolonged interests in specific topics or activities, commonly observed in autistic individuals. These fixations can dominate attention and conversation, sometimes to the exclusion of other subjects. Notably, Josh seems to a hyperfixation with luxury, and less intense obsessions related to transit systems, travel, and lawsuits.
